How to Budget a Trip (Without a Spreadsheet Degree)

Most trip budgets blow up in the same three places: transportation, lodging, and “incidentals” that were never really incidental. Here is a framework that catches all three before you book.

The Four Buckets

• Transportation: flights/trains/rental car — usually the biggest single line item
• Lodging: price it per night, then multiply — do not eyeball a weekly total
• Food & activities: estimate a realistic daily spend, not an aspirational one
• Buffer: add 15–20% on top for the stuff you forgot — you always forget something

Price Before You Get Attached

Rough-price all four buckets before falling in love with a specific itinerary. It is much easier to adjust dates, destination, or trip length before you have booked flights than after.

Where Points & Miles Fit In

If you are working points or miles into the plan, price the trip in both cash and points before booking so you can see which stretches further — sometimes cash is the better deal, especially with a strong sale fare.
