Visa and passport problems are almost entirely preventable with a five-minute check β and almost entirely un-fixable once you are standing at the airport. Do this before you book, not the week before you fly.
Passport Checklist
- Check expiration β many countries require 6 months of validity beyond your travel dates
- Check blank page requirements β some countries require 2+ blank visa pages
- If renewing, build in processing time β expedited service still takes weeks in busy seasons
Visa Checklist
- Check your specific passport’s visa requirement for the destination β it varies by nationality, not just destination
- Note whether it is visa-free, visa-on-arrival, or requires advance application
- Check if an e-Visa or online arrival form is required, even for “visa-free” countries
- Confirm how many entry stamps/pages the visa process will use if you are visiting multiple countries
Extra Documents Worth Having
A printed copy of your passport photo page, your visa/entry approval if applicable, and your onward/return ticket confirmation. Some border agents ask for proof of onward travel β an unconfirmed one-way ticket has caused real problems for travelers.
π‘ Passport & Visa Tips
- βCheck requirements 2β3 months before travel, not the week before β some visas take weeks to process
- βKeep a digital copy of your passport in cloud storage in case the physical one is lost
- βSome countries stamp differently based on land vs. air entry β check if that matters for your route
- βRegister international trips with your country’s embassy program if one is available
