Rainy season, dry season, monsoon, and hurricane season — decoded by region.
“Check the weather” means something different in every region — some places have a rainy/dry split instead of four seasons, some have a hurricane window that changes everything about booking. Here is the regional cheat sheet.
Think dry season vs. rainy season, not summer vs. winter. Rainy season often means a predictable afternoon downpour rather than an all-day washout — it is not always a dealbreaker, and prices drop.
Caribbean and Gulf hurricane season runs roughly June–November, peaking Aug–Oct. Check the regional storm season before booking non-refundable stays during these windows, and consider travel insurance that covers named storms.
New Zealand, Australia, Southern Africa, and most of South America run on flipped seasons — their summer is Northern Hemisphere winter. Double-check “summer trip” against the actual hemisphere before booking.
India, Nepal, and much of Southeast Asia have a monsoon season (roughly June–September in South Asia) that affects trekking access, road conditions, and humidity. Cool, dry season (Oct–Mar) is generally the better window for these regions.
