Beach and tropical trips fail on packing in two directions: overpacking “just in case” layers you never wear, or underpacking sun and bug protection you actually need every day. This list covers both the Caribbean-resort trip and the Southeast Asia beach-hop.
Clothing
- 4–6 lightweight, quick-dry outfits (fabric matters more than outfit count)
- 2 swimsuits (one is always drying)
- 1 cover-up or sarong — doubles as a towel, blanket, or scarf
- 1 light long-sleeve layer for sun, bugs, and over-air-conditioned flights
- Comfortable sandals + one pair of closed shoes for hikes or excursions
Sun & Bug Protection
- Reef-safe sunscreen (many islands now require it by law)
- After-sun aloe or gel
- Insect repellent with DEET or picaridin for dusk/jungle areas
- Wide-brim hat and UV sunglasses
Beach Gear
- Quick-dry microfiber towel (packs smaller than cotton)
- Dry bag for phone, cash, and cards at the beach or on boats
- Waterproof phone pouch
- Portable Bluetooth speaker (check resort/beach noise rules first)
Health & Extras
- Basic first-aid kit with rehydration salts
- Any prescription meds in carry-on, in original bottles
- Reusable water bottle (bring a filter if tap water is unsafe)
- Zip-lock bags for wet swimsuits and beach shoes
💡 Beach Packing Tips
- →Pack fewer clothes than you think — laundry is cheap or easy in most beach destinations
- →Roll, do not fold, to fight humidity-related wrinkling and save space
- →Check reef-safe sunscreen laws before you buy — some islands fine or confiscate non-compliant brands
- →Leave one packing cube empty for souvenirs on the way home
