Staying Connected Abroad: SIMs, eSIMs, and Hotspots

How to actually have data the moment you land, without a $200 roaming bill.

← All Tips & Hacks

Connectivity options break down into three real choices β€” and the right one depends on trip length, number of devices, and how much you actually need to be online.

eSIM (Best for Most Trips)

Install a destination or regional eSIM before you fly and activate it on landing. No physical SIM swap, no hunting for a local shop, and most plans can be bought and loaded from your phone in minutes. Best for trips under a month on one or two devices.

Physical Local SIM

Usually the cheapest per-gigabyte option, and worth it for longer stays. Requires an unlocked phone and sometimes local ID for registration. Best for digital nomads and longer backpacking trips.

Portable WiFi Hotspot

Best when traveling with multiple devices or as a group β€” one hotspot can cover a laptop, phone, and a travel companion’s devices on a single data plan. Adds one more thing to charge and carry, but simplifies group connectivity.

International Roaming

Usually the most expensive option, but the simplest if your carrier offers a reasonable day-pass rate for your destination. Worth it for very short trips where setup time is not worth the savings.

πŸ’‘ Connectivity Tips
  • β†’Buy and install an eSIM before you fly β€” do it on home WiFi, not airport WiFi
  • β†’Download offline maps for your destination before you lose signal
  • β†’Check if your bank/2FA app requires a home-country number to log in while traveling
  • β†’A power bank matters as much as data β€” dead phones cannot use good connectivity
